The National Government of Argentina has made a historic decision by lifting the ban on the export of live cattle, a restriction that had been in place for over 50 years. This measure, formalized through Decree No. 133/2025, aims to promote the competitiveness of Argentina’s agricultural sector and open new opportunities for meat producers.
The original regulation, dating back to 1973, imposed restrictions on the export of live animals for slaughter, limiting Argentina’s ability to capitalize on its potential in the international market. With the repeal of this law, the country can now actively participate in the global meat trade, benefiting from higher demand and better prices for its meat products.
Federico Sturzenegger, the head of the Economic Policy Secretariat, explained that the decision was made to improve conditions in the livestock sector and strengthen the Argentine economy. By allowing the export of live cattle, the government aims to enhance market competitiveness, boosting economic activity, increasing tax revenues, and opening new trade routes with various countries.
Additionally, Sturzenegger highlighted that the reform takes an integrated approach, focusing on improving the infrastructure and sanitary controls necessary to ensure that exports meet the highest international standards. The goal is to maintain the quality of Argentine beef, recognized worldwide for its flavor and texture, and strengthen its position in key markets such as Europe, Asia, and North America.
This measure helps Argentina move toward greater integration in international markets, contributing to the country’s economic growth. Exporting live cattle will benefit not only producers but also the entire value chain, including transporters, meat processors, and distributors.
The repeal of this law represents a fundamental shift in the country’s agricultural policy, aligning with global trends of freer trade and competitiveness.
